According to a PTI report, the incident occurred shortly after the Indian players took the field. Jarvo surprised everyone by calmly entering the venue while donning an Indian jersey, and subsequently attempted to approach Virat Kohli.
The security officer responsible for the Indian team wasted no time in responding to the situation, promptly apprehending the intruder, who was then escorted out of the premises. Virat Kohli also reacted to the unwelcome interruption by approaching Jarvo and engaging in a brief conversation.
When PTI inquired about the security breach, an ICC spokesperson provided a statement, “The individual concerned has been banned from attending any further games at the event and the matter is in the hands of the Indian authorities.”
Jarvo is a repeat offender, and this incident marks the fourth occasion on which he successfully breached security during a match involving India. He had previously faced a ban from English venues for a similar offense during India’s tour of England in 2021. Despite his history of repeated offenses, Jarvo’s actions had not been treated as a serious matter by security personnel, and he was allowed to enter unchecked. “The safety and security of everyone involved in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is our priority. We will work with the venue to understand what happened and consider if any additional security measures are required to prevent it happening again,” ICC spokesperson added.
In the meantime, the Indian spinners delivered an impressive performance, dismissing Australia for 199 in 49.3 overs. Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets, Kuldeep Yadav secured two, and Ashwin claimed one.
However, India faced a disastrous beginning in their response, with Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer all getting out without scoring. Currently, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are at the crease, trying to stabilize the innings.
